Action Research Plan

Upon heavy consideration and meeting with my principal, who is also my site supervisor, I have, once again, decided to change my action research topic. The question that I propose is will the state academic performance (STAAR) of our LEP students heavily increase with an increase in parent/teacher bilingual involvement. As I mentioned to my principal, I feel that our 9th and 10th graders do not understand the gravity of the STAAR test and the main reason being that the parents do not stress to them the importance of it because, due to the language barrier, they themselves do not know. In addition to that, we also have a problem with parents of our LEP students showing up to activities/workshops we host at school for them. Therefore, instead of asking them to come to us, we will go to them. My principal has authorized me to set up informational workshops/mixers at places where we know a great number of our LEP students and parents attend.

  1. Hey, sounds great! I noticed you repeated the step to create a plan for parents to achieve goal, was that on purpose? I'm thinking of changing my project as well, ugh! Glad you decided on one you like!

  3. Looks good Joseph. Did you know that you can sign in and edit the post to correct the error?
I think this is a good topic. I agree with you in that the language barrier stops them from participating like they other wise probably would if the language was not a problem. We had a technology night at our school, and a lot of the bilingual kids moms stayed in the library to visit with each other instead of going around the school checking out all the technology presentations that were being demonstrated. It will be interesting to know how your research goes.

  4. Joseph...what grade level are you going to be looking at specifically? You may want to mention your sample size and provide a few details about your sample of students and parents. Just a thought...
